As far as equal rights to immigrants are concerned, our world is still full of discrepancies. In such scenarios, there still exist small groups made up of individuals who still go out of their way to represent their interests. A special consideration goes to undocumented youths in Arizona whose cases have been taken by civil rights group.
Influence of Civil Rights Groups
There was this case in Arizona where the Governor, Jan Brewer, denied young immigrants access to driver’s licenses. As a discriminatory, this decree is one out of the many fronts that depict how immigrants still grapple with partisan treatment even in the existence of Acts meant to safeguard their stay. It is regrettable that even with the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival (DACA) protecting immigrants from untold injustices; the immigrant’s groups have still faced problems.
It is in the wake of such an anomaly that human rights groups such as the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund (MALDEF) helped the group to file a lawsuit. The lawsuit seeking to challenge that unconstitutional executive order said “Arizona’s policy has violated the Fourteenth Amendment (Equal Protection Clause) through discrimination against some noncitizens.
It has also gone further to violate the Supremacy Clause of the American Constitution by interfering with Federal Immigration Law.”
Even after that challenge, the Governor still expanded the ban on issuance of drivers’ license to this group to even include all other individuals who had earlier been granted deferred action. But due to persistence, and all-out breathtaking efforts by the civil rights group, the U.S Court of Appeal in
July 2014, ruled that Arizona State’s unconstitutional order was just too illegal to be in place. Consequently, the policy was blocked and frantic efforts by the Governor to keep it in place were further rejected at the Supreme Court.
Why Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey’s Steadfast Dedication
Such successful stories mark the zeal and the blueprint to the struggle of Larkin and Lacey as a group. They have come a long way in ensuring that the rights of migrants are well observed relentlessly even as all modalities to keep them settled remain a priority.
Since their unlawful arrest, they have received money for their settlement and have continually dedicated it to fund most migrant rights organization based in Arizona.
The above case is not an exception is bearing in mind the time and other logistical issues that accompany court proceedings, and with Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey’s continuous commitment to support such ventures, a discrimination-free Arizona is inevitable.
Finally, efforts from Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey are a testament that very soon, the US and the world as a whole will see an Arizona that capitalizes on youth energy and their differential dividends.
It will go contrary to the focus on litigations against the young people who only need a fair and just environment to live and work. In line with their “Allowing the dreamer to drive” policy, they will struggle to remain the champions of DACA program as they seek to embody its dividends.
