Betsy DeVos: A Reformer and Philanthropist

Elizabeth Dee (Betsy) DeVos is a reformer and an activist in the education system. For the last 30 years, Betsy has been actively involved in reforming the education system. Through her work in the education sector, Betsy was nominated and confirmed as the Secretary of Education in the Trump administration.

Betsy and her husband Dick had contributed a significant amount in support of the different organizations. A great percentage of their philanthropic contributions have gone in support of the education sector. Career

Betsy is the 11th Secretary of Education of the United States. She is the Chairman of the American Federation Children which is the leading advocacy group of the School Choice. AFC has helped over one million children to attended school of their choice. Betsy has been responsible for fostering new education opportunities in West Michigan. Together with her husband, Betsy founded the West Michigan Aviation Academy. The Aviation Academy is a public charter high school in the State.

Betsy DeVos serves a board member of the Foundation for Excellence in Education. She is a role model to many children and has mentored kids through the Kids Hope of United States of America. Betsy has also served as an in-school mentor for the at-risk students in Public School in Grand Rapids.

Betsy is the chairman of the Betsy and Dick DeVos Foundation. Through the Foundation, the couple has managed to support many students and also organizations. Betsy and Dick DeVos have donated a significant amount to health research, hospitals, Christian schools, and Evangelical missions.

Betsy DeVos has served as a member of the board of directors of various organizations including ArtPrize, Kids Hope USA, Kennedy Center, and Mars Hill Bible Church.

Betsy earned her Bachelor of Arts from Calvin College.

Political Activity

Betsy DeVos has participated in the Michigan Republican Party since 1982. She was elected as a delegate of the Michigan Party for 16 two-year terms consecutively since 1986. Between 1992 and 1997, Betsy served as the Republican National Committeewoman. She also served as the Chairman of the Michigan Republican Party between 1996 and 2000. Betsy resigned from the position in 2000 and resumed her responsibilities in 2003 after she was elected.

With an estimated wealth of $5.6 billion, the family has made donations of over $1.5 billion. During the nomination process to be secretary of education, it was revealed that Betsy Devos and her family made contributions of over $12 million in the year 2015. These donations were made through the Dick and Betsy Devos Family Foundation. In all these donations, Betsy is known to involve her children.

According to experts, donations made by the Devos are geared towards certain causes such as education. In fact, 26 percent of the donations go to education with another 3 percent going to small groups that support education reform in the United States. According to Betsy Devos, she became involved with transforming the educational sector as she felt that the current system was not helping American children fulfill the American dream. She also felt that children from the marginalized areas were in a disadvantaged position and could not realize their potential. Despite all the challenges facing the current system, Betsy Devos acknowledges the teachers and administrators who have devoted their life to changing the current system.

Experts also say that the donations made by Betsy Devos also focus on culture and arts that take 21 percent of the share. Other beneficiaries of her donations are churches, health, and human services, leadership and development as well as public policy and the community. Schools that have benefited from donations made by Betsy Devos include John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Rehoboth Christian School, West Michigan Aviation Academy as well as Ferris State University.

The things that Betsy Devos stands for when it comes to the education center is Christian motivation, school choice, school vouchers and the grading system. As a business woman, Betsy Devos has been involved with Windquest Group as the chairwoman. She was also involved in the production of a stage play called Scandalous.
